Small and Intimate wedding in the Canonbury Suite
Wren and Pim got married in the Canonbury Suite in Islington Town Hall. The stylish couple commissioned lil’ ol me to photograph this small and intimate wedding. The Islington based couple are planning a big celebration in South Africa later this year so this North London Town Hall Wedding completed the legal side of things.

I was waiting outside the Town Hall, on the sunny side of Upper Street. On time is late for me, I’m always half hour early for any wedding. Wren and Pim walked from their home near The New River Walk with their two dogs. A couple of friends were there to meet them and later to act as witnesses. Having said my initial ‘hello’s’ I started to document the hugs and high fives as the besties (and the dogs…beasties?) talked through their low key wedding plans.

Are dogs allowed in Islington Town Hall?
It turns out pet dogs ARE allowed in Islington Town Hall, but only one pet dog. Packs of dogs are not permitted into Islington Town Hall and two small pugs apparently represent a pack…doh! As the couple made their way into their wedding suite for their interviews, one kind guest (making up one quarter of all the guests) remained outside with the fierce hounds, one of which was called Donut…such a great name!

Wedding Portraits at Islington Town Hall
The magnificent marble staircase is clearly a big draw for couples marrying in this North London Town Hall. After the quick and easy wedding ceremony in the Canonbury Suite the couple and I used the stairs and the marble corridor with gorgeous stain glass for some pretty portraits, nothing too posed, all natural and relaxed.

Group Portraits After getting Married in Islington
The main steps of the town hall are obviously perfect for confetti and family group wedding portraits. The only downside to the main steps is they are busy, particularly at peak wedding season. I often use the stunning steps to Islington Assembly Hall, just around the corner on Richmond Grove. Wren and Pim had a bottle of Champagne to pop and celebrations to start so we moved away from Islington Town Hall and round the corner for a little more time and privacy. Glasses in hand the small wedding group had a fun walk to a nearby pub.

The New River Walk has been a family favourite for me and mine for many years. A super cute water way with huge, mature Weeping Willows and mini waterfalls. The river runs between Stoke Newington N16 and Islington N1. The entrance to this hidden London gem is conveniently a very short walk behind Islington Town Hall. We decided this would be an excellent route to both give the dogs a run (less a run than a trot…tiny legs) and also a chance for me to take some lush portraits. The New River is a fabulous back drop for a wedding portrait.
