A Proper North London Wedding
I had the great pleasure to photograph Hannah and Nick’s Islington Town Hall wedding. After the Council Chamber ceremony we all moved onto The Baring Gastropub which is not far away from Islington Town Hall, a quick cab ride or a 15 minute walk for the more adventurous. The following day the wedding party doubled in size and descended on The Dame Alice Owen Pub in between Islington and Clerkenwell for a proper wedding celebration.

I photographed a beautiful wedding at Fredericks Restaurant in Islington a few years back. Mary and Derek tied the knot at Islington Town Hall and then celebrated in style at Fredericks Restaurant in Camden Passage, Angel. Fast forward three years and Mary has dropped me a line to enquire if I can photograph her son’s wedding, also at Islington Town Hall. I get a real buzz from being the ‘go to’ photographer for a local family.

I have photographed many weddings at Islington Town Hall Council Chamber. This iconic North London Town Hall is a gorgeous venue for a wedding. The various room available to hire are all stylish and bright and the marble stair case and corridors are a perfect back drop for portraits. Before long Hannah and Nick were stepping into a storm of confetti and cheers. After some fun family portraits we hopped a black can to The Baring.

The Baring is a well respected and stylish Islington restaurant. The restaurant was once a pub but now exclusively runs as a destination foodie heaven. The wedding guests made their way upstairs to a stunning Private Dining room for drinks and canapes. The bride and groom and I nipped off for a stroll. There’s access to the canal tow path very near The Baring. I like a natural, unposed portrait so a wander along the canal was a perfect opportunity. The grit of urban graffiti alongside the beauty of the barges and mooring lines seemed to gel with Hannah and Nicks story.

The food, attention to detail and the staff at The Baring were all magnificent. It was my first visit to The Baring, though I live very close by in Stoke Newington. Hannah and Nick had commissioned my photography over two days. I left The Baring having shot a beautiful wedding at Islington Town Hall and a fun (and amazing looking!) wedding reception. I reconnected with the whole party the following day at the Dame Alice Owen Pub just down the road from Angel Islington toward Clerkenwell.

I have passed the Dame Alice Owen pub many times, mostly on my way to some of my favourite Clerkenwell wedding venues such as The Coin Laundry, Finsbury Town Hall, and The Crypt on the Green. This awesome North London pub has a bunch of old school charm. A long Victorian bar dominates the interior of the Dame Alice Owen pub. There is also space for a small dance-floor and a DJ or band to set up. Nick and Hannah had booked a talented pianist to provide lovely background vibes. A wicked Northern Soul DJ took over later in the evening.

If you are looking for a North London pub to host your wedding reception then The Dame Alice Owen is a fab option. It’s walkable from Islington Town Hall and has bundles of space. There is a full kitchen in the pub that produced amazing pizzas later in the evening – such a great idea to keep the food coming when the booze is flowing!
