clerkenwell crypt on the green wedding 0031

The Crypt On The Green in Clerkenwell hosted Rosie and Denzil’s fabulous Wedding Reception. The wedding day began at St. Etheldreda’s Church in Farringdon. I have photographed a number of weddings at St. Etheldreda’s over the years and love this beautiful old church. St. Etheldreda’s is London’s oldest Catholic Church and as such is dark and romantic with warm low level lighting. The historic old church is located in Farringdon, near Holborn, its on a private road called Ely Place. Ely place looks straight out of a Dickens novel, original street lamps and stunning Regency houses make for a beautiful back drop for portraits. Just around the corner from St. Etheldreda’s is a ancient pub called The Mitre, well worth a visit.

St. Etheldreda’s Church Wedding in Farringdon

The traditional London church wedding ceremony was combined with Mass and took an hour or so. We were blessed with some lovely autumn sunshine that light up Rosie and Denzil through the spectacular stain glass windows. After the wedding ceremony guests made their way outside for a fun group picture on Ely Place. The bride and groom and I remained at St. Etheldreda’s for a few portraits using Ely Place as a back drop. We aimed to have a little stroll when we arrived to The Crypt On The Green in Clerkenwell but didn’t want to miss the opportunity of a wedding portrait or two in the privacy of Ely Place.

We arrived to The Crypt on the Green in Clerkenwell courtesy of a fantastic vintage American car, a favour from one of Rosie’s mates. As the sun was shining we decided to have a little stroll while the wedding guests enjoyed al-fresco drinks in The Long Walk garden behind the Crypt on the Green. The back streets of Clerkenwell are particularly cute and work well for a post wedding stroll. I always aim for a ten to fifteen minutes max for a Mr and Mrs portrait session. I don’t like to remove a bride and groom from their own wedding for long! We returned to the Crypt On the Green garden drinks where Rosie and Denzil floated about, drink in hand celebrating.

Stylish and Cool Clerkenwell and Islington Wedding Reception Venues

Clerkenwell is a chic and cool little area of central London. There are a ton of lovely old pubs and cobbled back streets, The Crypt On The Green fits right into the stylish area. Islington Town Hall and Old Finsbury Town Hall are super close to The Crypt On The Green making this wedding reception venue very convenient. At the rear of the church (below which is the crypt venue space) is a useful little garden with some ornate steps that work well for family portraits. Before long the wedding reception had moved indoors and downstairs to the amazing vaulted Crypt on the Green space. Tables were laid and a sound system in place. Next on the wedding agenda was speeches and a traditional Goan wedding song.

The bar was open and busy, this Clerkenwell wedding was about to go crazy. The DJ go the party started and Rosie and Denzil took to the floor for their fist dance. The Crypt on the Green is a basement space and as such can be quite dark. I’m very experienced at wedding photography and photography in general having been a professional for twenty years or so. It was a lovely touch therefore when many of the guests turned on their phone camera lights and trained them on the dancing newly weds. Soon the couple were joined by all their guests and the party really kicked off. I left the awesome wedding reception late that night and would like to thank everyone for making me so welcome.
