I used to live in Hampstead so it was a real pleasure to be asked photograph a wedding at St. Stephens Church, Pond Street on Rosslyn Hill. St.Stephens Church used to be derelict and squatted when I lived in the area so it was fabulous to see it restored as an event space. Hannah and Alex had booked me to photograph their wedding back in 2019. There were 4 pandemic postponements in the lead up to this stylish Hampstead wedding but we got there in the end! The bride and groom had legally tied the knot some months before so this North London wedding day was a Humanist service led by their great friend Ed – a proper family affair.

This beautiful church on Rosslyn Hill in Hampstead is deconsecrated, meaning it is no longer an actual place of worship. The benefit of this for a wedding is that the space can be tweaked perfectly for what ever event you are planning. Alex and Hannah had fairy lights on all the columns, a stunning and romantic touch. Once the guests had arrived and were seated the bride and groom walked down the aisle together. The wedding ceremony was fun and touching. I like to be unobtrusive at a wedding and St. Stephens Church in Hampstead enables this perfectly. There are wide aisles at either side which enable me to move freely around the Church including behind the bride and groom without being spotted. I always use silent and long lenses so I don’t impact on the wedding and rarely use flash as it is very distracting.

Which is the best confetti to buy for a wedding?

I love confetti. I am going to say it again, I love confetti! When a couple walk out of a ceremony into a flood of confetti and cheers it will be a huge take away from the day as a whole and will stay with them for the rest of their lives. The pictures I take of couples being showered with confetti are often the shots that get framed and hung on the wall therefore I think a little bit of care should be taken over which confetti to buy. Organic dried petals are all the rage these days and, on the whole are acceptable in moist venues. I totally agree that silver and gold cut up plastic should be fazed out, it doesn’t degrade and stays littering the streets around Town halls and churches for years. My issue with the dried petals is the brown colour and the sharp edges, it looks dull in pictures. My favorite confetti is bio-degradable white or colour paper circles. The type of confetti that floats for ages and makes stunning clouds of confetti.

Finsbury Town Hall Wedding Reception

No my confetti advice/rant is over we can return to Hannah and Alex’s wonderful Hampstead wedding and Finsbury Town Hall wedding reception. Vintage buses were ready to whisk (drive very slowly through Londons streets as it was Gay Pride and London was heaving..) the wedding party to the Old Finsbury Town Hall. I have photographed a number a awesome wedding receptions at this iconic venue. If you haven’t seen the interior of this venue then you are in for a treat. The exterior is pretty unremarkable but the ball room is magnificent. The painted ceiling and coving is stunning – uber chic. There is a cool stage too which works well for bands and DJ’s. Finsbury Town Hall has two rooms which is very useful for a pre dinner drinks option. The corridor dividing the two main rooms has been strung with fairy lights which I used for a lovely, impromtu portrait of the couple. I prefer to photograph natural portrasits so when Alex and Hannah were waiting in the fairy lights to enter the ball room I grabbed a quick picture.

If you are thinking about getting married in Hampstead later in 2022 or next year then I love to hear from you. You can use my contact form to check my availability then we can meet to chat through your plans. St. Stephens Church in Hampstead is a fabulous wedding venue and when coupled with Old Finsbury Town Hall you have a pretty special day ahead of you. I left the happy couple on the dance-floor. The bar was stocked with Pimms and Aperol Spritz and didn’t look like it was going to run low at any point. I live in Stoke Newington which is very close to Islington Town Hall and not far from Old Finsbury Town Hall. My journey home was easy peasy, I cant wait for my next visit to both these wonderful London wedding venues.
